Zuma Is Coming, Like It Or Not
Submitted by capdog on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 - 06:55

So as you've probably heard by now, Zuma is leaps and bounds ahead of his competition in the presidency race, with the Women's League now also giving him their backing.

With so many people promising to leave South Africa if he ever gets the top job (seriously?!), I thought I'd jot down a few notes to fuel the debate, from the classic Spiegel interview to more moderate and rational analysis of his character. Will Zuma turn SA into Zimbabwe? Is it even possible against the backdrop of the new wealthy ANC businessmen?

Unauthorised: Thabo Mbeki Review
Submitted by capdog on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 05:32

The SABC commissions and funds a documentary on Thabo Mbeki; then spends an estimated five times that amount in legal fees trying to keep it off the air. Sound fishy to you? What are they trying so desperately to hide?

I went to a free screening of "Unauthorised: Mbeki" at the Kwasuka theatre on Wednesday, and came to the conclusion that there's nothing too controversial about it at all. Which is worrying in many ways, because if the SABC will go to such lengths to keep a fairly moderate documentary from airing, what hope do we ever have for a truly free and independent public broadcaster?

Submitted by capdog on Monday, June 18, 2007 - 16:36 |

Chrisso sent in this highly amusing flyer that he picked up at the beach and scanned for our enjoyment. For R20, it seems, Dr Mama and Dr Muwanga can do just about anything!

* Removal of misunderstandings with anybody
* Men's penis which cannot erect powerfully
* Women who cannot produce
* Gonorrhea
* To be liked at work
* Diabetes
* Education
* Court Cases
* Tuberculosis

IFP Supporters Looting Street Traders
Submitted by capdog on Monday, May 28, 2007 - 18:21 |

Despite the DA and IFP's claims to the contrary, we all heard the reports of violence and looting at the march against the name changes. Here's a fantastic picture of some marchers stealing from a street vendor! It was snapped by rogan.w and posted to his flickr account, check the original here.

A1 Gran Prix Driver Speaks
Submitted by capdog on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 14:33 |

"So Durban is a ... [hesitates]... nice ... city, but not what I'd call my number one tourist destination."

So says James Hinchcliffe, the Canadian A1 Gran Prix driver who competed in this year's event on the Durban street track. In his YouTube video post, he talks about being dealt a poor hand in the race when his engine blew; as well as recounting a few stories influencing his view that Durban is a dangerous city, one that tourists would be better off avoiding.

Sticks And Stones
Submitted by hedmekanik on Wednesday, April 25, 2007 - 11:51 |

Sticks and Stones may break my bones but names... names will start a shitfight.

‘It was a war. People died on both sides. The war is over, and yet we continue to fight amongst ourselves. The dead would not want their names to be the cause of such bickering; they died so we could live in peace.’ – Viet Cong General, 1978, commenting on the rise of the politically-motivated renaming of streets and landmarks in the post-war period.

Bad Bob's Mad Brew
Submitted by hedmekanik on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 - 11:40

It was all going so swimmingly - those honky bastards had been kicked off those ill-gotten farms, the tobacco lords now cowered quietly in Vic Falls and made obsequious grovelling noises whilst the last scraps of resistance had been effectively undermined and brought into line by an unrelenting assault on their families and loved ones. The country had effectively been emptied, leaving only a handful of diehard Green Bombers to lord over municipal dumps, and of course Bob, who was convinced that victory was at last at hand, but there seemed nobody about to enjoy the moment with. Bugger.

Fight Against Telkom!
Submitted by capdog on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 18:00

There is a company in South Africa that has done more damage to the economy than anything else - a government owned entity with a monopoly over telecoms and a hell-bent desire to fleece citizens; while simultaneously posting record profits and lining the pockets of it's BEE investors. Guess who? Telkom of course. Until now, there has been little public activism, but that's changing on Friday, when we will publish a full-page advert in the Mail & Guardian denouncing Telkom's demonopoly.

Hey Magic Boy!
Submitted by capdog on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 19:55

So would you believe it, in the last month I've been racially abused - not once, but twice, on two separate occasions! At least, I think I have.

Politrickhell?
Submitted by Obi on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 - 07:13

Okay people, tell me - what the hell is going on in this country, huh? You tell me if I'm dreaming or what, but this shit seems to me like we are living in a movie - and a bad C-grader at that!
