Night Rider
Submitted by s.o.l.asassyn on Tuesday, October 17, 2006 - 19:39

So I was in a suitably dodgy end of Durban-town-city on Sunday. Post excellent lunch and a standard beach saunter, when I came across this promo activity outside the Wheel, across the road from what used to be the Bazaar.

Surfing Durban
Submitted by capdog on Thursday, September 21, 2006 - 06:37

My dirty little secret is that despite always thinking of myself as a bone fide Durbanite, I only started surfing this year. Shameful, I know, and be assured I spend sleepless nights thinking about how many good waves I’ve missed in my lifetime. Thing is, until recently, I’ve always thought that people who wake up at 5:00am to go to the beach in the rain were suffering from the condition known as ‘insanity’.

Wish To Know Taxi
Submitted by capdog on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 - 18:12

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more ridiculous than “Down Loading Virus” (click here), this newcomer bursts onto the streets and steals the show. Yes, it’s “I wish to know”; a taxi that wears it's ignorance proudly on it's sleeve.

Goats On The Durban Streets
Submitted by capdog on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 08:36

In the absence of any real content (and to brighten your day a bit), here are some pictures of the goats that roam the streets next to our offices. We’re a software development house based on Francois Road, under the University, and these buggers hang around eating the plants outside my window. Their owners don’t seem to notice or care. Ah yes, one of the great things about South Africa! Wildlife!

Pavilion Wheelchair Guy Let Down
Submitted by capdog on Friday, September 1, 2006 - 06:15

If you've been round to The Pavilion lately, you would probably have noticed the broken traffic lights at the main intersection, which flash red for a couple of hours every day. You won't find me complaining, because there are now far less hawkers in the road, and the traffic actually seems to flow a hell of a lot better than it did with the robots working. However, for the guy in the wheelchair, those flashing lights spell disaster.

Taxi Virus
Submitted by capdog on Saturday, August 26, 2006 - 15:08

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a more ridiculous or ironic name for a taxi than 'Down Loading Virus'. It's almost like the taxis are laughing at us now, they know they're the scourge of the roads, but instead of being ashamed, they advertise the fact!

Well, I accept their declaration of war and encourage everyone to join me... if you see a dumb sticker on a taxi, snap it with your cellphone camera and send it in so we can mock the fool!

Durban Hotel Development
Submitted by dysan1 on Wednesday, August 23, 2006 - 17:40

As the tourism pie in South Africa grows, so too does the need for quality accommodation. Since the birth of the ICC and Hilton hotel in 1997, Durban has seen little hotel development. Besides the new hotels around the Florida road precinct; Quarters, The Benjamin and the latest Florida Park Hotel, there has been little else to add to the city's hotel portfolio, and was a clear sign of stagnant growth in the hospitality industry.

Soccer Stadium Bites The Dust
Submitted by capdog on Thursday, July 20, 2006 - 09:09

Speaking of the World Cup, there's no going back now as the old soccer stadium was demolished recently! These pics are taken from the great skyscrapercity.com development forum, where mountains of great content on Durban goes unseen.

In My Day - Johnny's Roti Was Cheap!
Submitted by capdog on Tuesday, July 18, 2006 - 09:39

Here's the oldest Johnnie's menu I have, proof that back in the day a Chip and Cheese Roti would only set you back R8! Compared to R18 these days, it was quite reasonable back then. Thankfully, the size hasn't decreased a bit, and you can still expect a meal for two with every drunken purchase.

Inanda Dam
Submitted by capdog on Tuesday, July 18, 2006 - 07:54

Just outside of Hillcrest, about half an hour from Durban is the stunning Inanda Dam reserve. It's amazing how you can drive two hundred meters past the Camelot golf-estate-cum-fortress-for-rich-people; and suddenly be in the most rural Kwazulu-Natal, with goats, cows and various other wildlife walking and lying in the road.
