Durban People Mover
Submitted by capdog on Tuesday, July 17, 2007 - 16:12

We headed down to Suncoast on Sunday afternoon with the express intention of riding Durban's new "people mover". Not to actually go anywhere, but just to suss it out and get a feel for the quality of service.

It's not a bad job, and they've delivered well on the many promises made. Unfortunately, this is shrouded by the fact that the design company behind the map has made it near impossible to actually find the bus stops, and very difficult to plan routes.

Italians Get It Horribly, Horribly Wrong
Submitted by capdog on Saturday, July 7, 2007 - 08:44

From the country that brought us the propaganga of Mussolini comes an even greater outburst of misinformation: according to the official South Africa tourism site in Italy, the seas of Durban were completely frozen during the recent cold spell!

Abahlali baseMjondolo
Submitted by capdog on Wednesday, July 4, 2007 - 18:19 |

Just as Durban Scouts aims to bring readers a certain perspective on life in this city, so too does the website of Abahlali baseMjondolo (www.abahlali.org). The similarities are striking: both sites use the Drupal system to create content, they have similar layout, and both present users with dated entries and the ability to comment, much like a blog.

However, the story these two websites tell of life in Durban could not be more polarised. On Abahlali, it would be common to find an article detailing the deaths of tens of people in a raging shack fire; whereas on Durban Scouts you're more likely to find a review of the latest in local music happenings. Two tales that seem worlds apart, but are ultimately bound by a common future in this city.

Undressing Durban Book Review
Submitted by capdog on Thursday, May 31, 2007 - 17:12

“Undressing Durban” is a staggeringly important book - absolutely critical reading for all us Durbanites who hope to overcome the unique challenge of building a vibrant, culturally integrated city. It's a stark exposure, and subsequent dismissal, of all the prejudices and misconceptions that we harbour deep down in our collective psyches, as racialised members of this proud 'Rainbow Nation'.

The book is a collection of approximately fifty diverse essays and studies, written mostly by students, academics and post-graduates from the Sociology department at UKZN. It was originally conceived as an alternative guide for the delegates visiting Durban for the International Sociology Convention - “alternative” in the sense that it “Undressed” Durban to it's bare form, and presented the truth about the many different ways the city is perceived by it's various social groups. The truth that the local tourism agencys are often reluctant to talk about.

A1 Gran Prix Driver Speaks
Submitted by capdog on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 14:33 |

"So Durban is a ... [hesitates]... nice ... city, but not what I'd call my number one tourist destination."

So says James Hinchcliffe, the Canadian A1 Gran Prix driver who competed in this year's event on the Durban street track. In his YouTube video post, he talks about being dealt a poor hand in the race when his engine blew; as well as recounting a few stories influencing his view that Durban is a dangerous city, one that tourists would be better off avoiding.

Sticks And Stones
Submitted by hedmekanik on Wednesday, April 25, 2007 - 11:51 |

Sticks and Stones may break my bones but names... names will start a shitfight.

‘It was a war. People died on both sides. The war is over, and yet we continue to fight amongst ourselves. The dead would not want their names to be the cause of such bickering; they died so we could live in peace.’ – Viet Cong General, 1978, commenting on the rise of the politically-motivated renaming of streets and landmarks in the post-war period.

The Circus Is Coming Early
Submitted by capdog on Thursday, March 29, 2007 - 07:14

Drew Preston posted these photos on his Flickr account, it's a man and his kids doing gymnastic busking on North Beach! Absolutely insane! It would be great to see a real industry forming around this, similar to London's Covent Garden where professional street performers create superb entertainment.

Submitted by capdog on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 19:37

You will all be very pleased to know that each Durban suburb has finally been allocated it's own hideous 'community' website! It took an age, but finally... it's done. Now take a look for yourself, at what our inbred crop of web designers have produced:

Durban Beachfront Is Gross
Submitted by capdog on Friday, January 5, 2007 - 13:33

You'd think with all these bins at the beachfront, the place would be shiny and sparkling. But no. Despite the fact that there is a bin literally every five steps, to the point where they actually get in the way, there is STILL filth everywhere.
