Taxi Of The Week: Raikkonen

Taxi Of The Week: Raikkonen

Or simply "Kimi" to his friends. From lap to lap he goes, full throttle, cutting through corners and tearing up the opposition; beating his personal best time and claiming yet another podium finish.

We caught up with Kimi this weekend and he was gracious enough to answer a few questions.

capdog: Mr Kimi Raikkonen, what is your pit stop refueling strategy for this year's season?

Raikkonen: Well cappie, we generally prefer to put twenty rands '97 whenever the little light shines on my dashboard. I'd rather go for a light fuel load so that we can squeeze an extra passenger in without the weight of the vehicle causing the chassis to drag on the road.

Besides, there's a big rust hole in the petrol tank so putting any more than a couple of litres causes it to pour out every time I take a corner. It's a bit wasteful.

capdog: I see. Many of the other drivers are opting for Bridgestones this year, citing reliability and road-hold as the big advantages. What are your thoughts on that?

Raikkonen: That's interesting, because we like to go with our trusty retreaded tyres. Whereas the other teams find it necessary to spend ages at the pits doing changes, we find one set of tyres to be perfectly adequate for a couple of seasons.

capdog: I notice there's very little rubber left on the contact area of your tyres. Tell me a little more about that?

Raikkonen: With pleasure. Protruding radial belts are the secret to good cornering. You see, the little steel bits dig down into the dirt roads, just like mini grappling hooks to give you that added holding ability.

Another advantage is that after a hard day doing time trials, I can come home and plough my field by doing a couple of laps around it. Saves me hours of work and the wife can plant some mielies the next morning.

capdog: You've hand-selected your crew this season. What kind of attributes do you look for when screening potential candidates?

Raikkonen: The guys this year have indeed been great. Generally we prefer the crew to be as forceful as possible, we don't like to wait around while passengers dawdle and fuss with shopping bags and small children.

Bongi, my man on board, does a good job pulling people on and off in the least time possible. Often, I don't even have to stop at the rank. I just slow down a bit and he leans out door grabbing people by their clothes and yanking them inside. It really gives me an edge over the competitors.

capdog: Kimi, great chatting and good luck for the upcoming season. All the best.

Raikkonen: Thanks cappie.
