Everyone has been talking lately about Florida Road’s latest addition, Taco Zulu. I finally had a chance to check it out last night, and needless to say the place is fantastic.
The first thing that strikes you is the friendly and relaxed attitude of the venue, especially the waitrons, who have no uniforms and thus blend in perfectly with the crowd. The lack of formality between staff and customers creates an awesome vibe, as it feels like you’re eating at good friend’s house rather than a Mexican restaurant. ‘Good evening sirs’ is substituted with ‘Howzit okes’, as handshakes, smiles and friendly greetings are seen everywhere. The inside of the bathroom has been covered with stickers, from Decay Clothing to surf brands and Volcom Stone, and even the walls are covered in photos of the staff and customers chilling out together and stuffing around.
Despite the informal attitude, the service was outstanding with our food arriving in perfect time, and our drinks never getting low without someone offering another round. I had the infamous Steak Chimichanga, which is large deep fried (but not oily) tortilla wrap; stuffed with beans, rice, cheese, mushroom, onion and topped with sour cream, guacamole and fresh salsa. It was superbly filling, and a real steal at R31!
If you are trying to keep your costs down (every last cent counts towards another beer, after all), then you’ll be stoked to see that despite the insane quality of the food at Taco Zulu, nothing on the menu costs more than R40! Finally, some competition for Florida Road’s long standing champion, Spiga D’oro!
Even if you’re not hungry, go for a quick drink at the upstairs bar, or chill out while watching some surfing videos and browsing a Zigzag magazine on the couches. With a young, trendy crowd and refreshingly relaxed staff to compliment, this Mexican restaurant looks perfectly at home on the east coast of Africa.

And they played the Goldfish album while we were there! Awesome.
Cant think of a better spot to transfer coins into food. The music, vibe and chow is unmatched and CHEAP. Whats really cool is going in a group and all getting something different, they cater for that sort of thing, cutting up the chow to share...
What bugged me was the cocktail menu. There are some awesome tequila cocktails listed but they cant make them for whatever reason i dont know. When you're chowing mexican you get keen for that sort of thing. That is my one and only gripe. I love it and will go back there. Repeatedly
the Enchiladas are my absolute fave...along with a Moijto = best combo ever!!
My only gripe is the fact that they have to close 11pm! All because of the residents complaining.
I mean come on..if you choose to live on/around Florida Rd you should live with the consequences. There is always gonna be partying goin on late...especially on weekends.
The whole area has odd zoning, like more towards Umgeni road is like light industrial, but just one road up and its uber-residential. Windermere road has the same problem. But you damn right, who the hell decides to move to Florida road for peace and quiet anyway. idiots.
No hay ningunos tacos para el amor, ni dinero. Mierde!
Went to Taco Zulu on Saturday nite...walking along in the hanging driz wit my gelf, looking forward to the chimichanga from hell, and lo! and behold! alack! and alas....they were closed. Sign on the gate said 'Cathy we're at Johnny's"
Thunk. Wawasat? that was my dream chimi hitting the skids. Ah well, pizza it was. Que sera & and all that.
A little later and a little further down Florida Rd, we were watching Goldfish and who do we spy jumping up and down like an electrocuted meerkat but one owner of said Chicano tavern, he say 'jeezbrubloodyhellitsuckscuz' and proceeded to give me some garbled and not altogether coherent story which may or may not involve licenses and the council's archaic capacity for beaureaucratic sluggishness. Que es lacrimosa.

Jeez that's a coincidence. We also went to Taco before Society on Sat, and saw the SAME sign "Cathy we're at Johnny's"!
Instead went to Yossi's, which was great but a little out of the way!
And I spoke to a dude at Society about Taco, and he said they were re-opening on Tuesday!
Madre de dios, such a small town. Soon eenuff, leedle dawgee, we shall see each othar in thee main streeet at nooon. An mebbe eef you are a goood leedle dawgee I buy joo a Mojito, cabron.

Howzit...well it's been 5 long years in Ireland and the UK but I'm packing it in and returning to the homeland. Should I be getting excited about getting back to Durban guys?????
Trick question? YES! Durban kicks the UK's ass! :)
I don't even know how to break a chatbox!
