In the changing landscape of the music recording and publishing industry which in the last decade has been revolutionised by the vast array of digital media [hardware, software and transient online media], one aspect that hasn't received alot of attention in South Africa is soundtracks for PC and console games.
Most artists and producers looking to publish and commercially distribute their works have battled through the electronic media maze, however this has also given rise to a new set of artists and producers who would otherwise never have had the opportunity to publish or distribute their musical creations to a wider audience.
The pervasive internet and world wide web, and the highly portable digital formats such as mp3, have lead to many a home based, bedroom or garage producer or band being able to get their sounds out to a dispersed global audience.
One such opportunity to further extend the reach of accessing new and varied audiences is that of creating soundtrack work for video, movie, and also for PC and gaming console games.
I still remember the pioneering and classic soundtrack to WipeOut on the Playstation that set new standards in getting leading dance artists [eg Prodigy, Orbital] to create a cutting edge soundtrack to enhance this adrenalin inducing game!
An initiative by Microsoft's XBox, has sent an open invitation to bands, artists and producers to sync up sample soundtracks for some new games and sample video clips, as part of an online competition, that could see the winner recording the selected work [and other tracks] in a professional studio in the USA!
