Ok so i not the burn type...but tell me if thisis true. mates that go there tell me it is moving to stamford hill road? That will mean u will have the Skyybar and panamaroom house crowd...the One44 rugga crowd...the Burn goth/rock/punk crowd...the roman lounge gay crowd and teasers next to each other...hmmmm evenings in durban will never be dell from then onwards :)
Hopefully people will have open minds about the whole deal, and sample some of the other clubs to get a feel for what's out there. Roman Lounge can be a riot, I once watched a floor show thing there with this queen dressed up to the nines, can-can dancing up and down ad-libing some 50's cabaret track... it was an experience.
dysan1 - stick to your knitting. what type are you if you're not the burn type?
i must say that since i've come back from pmb i havent really gotten into going anywhere specific!! it's all rather intimidating when you're used to a 2 club town :) hee hee!!
i've never been out in pmb...must be a different experience...and romans can be great! hope that the street will be great and terribly diverse..get another spiga type cafe in stamford hill i hope!
Jeez have you been away that long?!
From personal experience I'll just say that PMB is great when you're in the early days of varsity and you wanna have a huge party with all your new varsity friends. It's so cheap there that you can go out with R50 and still have change for the taxi on the way home.
ok explain to me the attraction of Burn...cos u all seem to be Burn lovers...
I think the attraction is that its the only place where 'alternative' music lovers can go and here what they dig in an otherwise commercial / jock infested / meat market that is Durban nightlife...and downstairs you can shake your groove thang to some kickass indie! Gets my vote
Well, I like it for a few reasons:
1) They play brilliant music. All the very latest heavy, alternative, emo, punk, indie, rock, hardcore, etc. songs are played. This is a stark contrast to clubs which have been playing the same goddamn playlist EVERY SINGLE NIGHT for the last 15 years: Counting Crows - Mr Jones; Build-me-up buttercup... need I carry on? Sorry if I sound angry about this one but it really is my pet hate.
2) There's no dress code, so in summer when it's 30 degrees outside, 50 degrees inside, you can wear a vest, slops and baggies. Like it should be in Durban.
3) The crowd is awesome. It's not a place filled with satan-worshippers, as most people who haven't been there will tell you. 90% are regular people who are simply into the music, and yes, there are also goths but there's really no reason to fear goths. Believe me. Drunk rugga buggers are FAR more frightening than a skinny dude with makeup on.
4) Cheap drinks (well it used to be, now it's slightly below average).
5) No attitude from bouncers - they are all professional, good okes.
6) Hardly any fights - no attitude from the other people. If you bump someone and they spill their drink, the worst you get is a squif look. If you apologise, then they normally smile and say "it's cool".
7) LIVE MUSIC!!! This is the biggest drawpoint! Bands rule.
8) Down-to-earth chicks (well mostly...). At other clubs you get these girls who doll themselves up like they're on Hollywood Boulevard and are super pretentious and snobby, snotty etc. Punk girls rule!
9) Club layout is cool. You can chat on the benches and you don't have to scream above the music. There's the beer bar with the high tables, pool tables, foozball, couches by Sideburn ...
Hmmm maybe I should've done a whole article on this... anyway those are my reasons! I still enjoy variety and I'm always out at other places too.
well thats very informative...thanx...
To be honest i have never gone cos i am not keen on parking my car in that area! But maybe i'll try get a lift...
I see that you all have this rock love...the one thing i do think durban needs is more live music venues that cover a wide genre of music and encourage more people to get out and experience it. i think from u say burn does that, but i dont think that it is an environment that encourages most people to go. i therefore think that other venues should be established too..then again when it moves to stamford hill i might be able to attract people that dont want to venture to umbilo.
Also we need a proper comedy club!!!
No prob! And you definitely hit the nail on the head with regards to venues for soft-rock music and comedy!
Seriously though, the current Burn is not that far into Umbilo, in fact most would argue it's actually in Glenwood (it's one block away from Davenport centre). The car guards are like ex-military white dudes with walkie-talkies, bullet proof vests, and heavy weaponry. Not joking.
Having said that, cars still get broken into. But the same happens outside Tiger, it's always a risk.
Like, fully, dude!
Dig this post =) Well done! Keep up the spirit of Burn!
33% of you said "Other..." but nobody has mentioned any other club names.... what gives? Do you all know a secret club or something??
Well ... Crowded House ... 9 bar ... ?? But I don't think many people go up to pmb. I must admit though that I haven't been out in pmb for a long time too ... well not in a few months since I've moved home. Good place though, I always had good times :)
As for durban ... I'd like to know too ... hee hee :)
When I voted 'other' I actually had a few places in mind...not really clubs but places that vary according to the crowd and the party being held there - places like Beanbag, the BAT Centre, Society...u get the picture?? Burn would be a close second, but in terms of how much time I spend at a specific place at nite, none of the choices apply except Burn, and its not the BEST in my opinion!
Desperately trying to organise a night out for everyone that works with me, we want to go to a club anywhere but it must be good, a real venue that will be talked about for ages. Obviously over 18's as we have a couple of young ones here, it will be a Tuesday night the one next month before the Bank holiday so atmosphere will be a bonus! Please add comments...........Prrrllleeaasssee!
Hmm interesting, are you guys Durban based? I would say Burn, but that's probably not a great idea for an office party! If you're into dance music, maybe try 80's or One44. Panama Room and quite a few of the other clubs are over-21.
80's is always fun and better than Tiger IMHO.
before a public hol there should be loads happening...i know tues is usually wonder bar (cant comment - never been) maybe u should start by having dinner somewhere lively like spiga or taco zulu - these 2 arent gonna put you outta pocket - both really cheap and then move the party down to casablanca, society or panama room? I hear casablanca is ok if you're into commercial places like tiger tiger and 80's. Your have PLENTY options available if youre looking for a boozy night on the town dude!
Thanks to your comments we are set on 80's and we are doing the Richsha Bus there and back so we will have our party before hand. We are all still working until 10pm so no room for dinner. Thanks again for your help!!!!
Should be cool! 80's is cheezy but good wholesome fun when you're smashed.
Cheesy is always good for a team building night out. I'm not a drinker so I guess I will have more fun!!!! Apparently it will be students night on the Tuesday and they are expecting a large crowd not including ourselves, we are probably going to be between 50 - 70. The bus however will be the cherry on the cake! A 40 minute drive from our departure point to the club will see a load of catching up at 10:30pm at night, and none of us will have to worry about the drinking driving thing on the way home.
jeez that's a big group. 80's must have been stoked to hear that. You can also book out the outside section of the club, which may be good if there are 70 of you! It's a nice area with a seperate bar.
Wish I had known that took about 2 days to get hold of the owner/manager, now I will try again and organise the outside bit. He did sound a bit peachy when I told him the number.Although still awaiting a summary of drink prices they are probably marking them up just for our group?!?!
Looking forward to it the last time I went to 80's I think it was called Thunder Junction and I promptly took out 2 bouncer on my way out (stairs and heels not a good combination sober or drunk). In actual fact my old haunts used to the likes of Cattlemanns, CC's and Shunter's what happened to good places where everyone wanted to know your name!!!!
Normally it's very cheap. They have all sorts of specials, like 2-for-1 and pig's nights, but probably not on a Tuesday.
I doubt they would mark up the drinks! If they do, we should expose it cause that is bull!
Let us know how much the outside section costs.
As for those clubs, I haven't heard of a single one! When were they open? Like the 80's or something?
The clubs I mentioned were still in and around in the early 90's. Shunters used to be at the Workshop, Cattlemanns on the opposite round by Joe Kool's and CC's was in Smith Street accross the Road from where Kent Motors is now. But then you had Kango's, Bonkers, Star's, Calico Jacks and Chicargo's to name a few other's. I am also not ashamed to say I frequented the under 18's club Rippingtons across from the Wheel.
They were the greatest of times
I remember my sister used to go to Stars, and another one called Retros. I went to Calico's and Bonkers, but none of the others! If you still have old flyers or any pics of the clubs, feel free to send them in and write a little bit, it would be cool to keep an archive for posterity!
Well our Club night out has gone for a ball!?!?! I received a call from the owner of 80's this evening to be told that they are not opening on the Tuesday we are meant to be attending. I know have a bus and 30 people who have paid but no where to go, I was given Wonder Bar as an alternative as Tiger Tiger , 330 etc are not open on a Tuesday night?!?!?!?! Damn fine!?!?!?!?
What to do now?????
That sucks, what a bunch of pricks! How can they change their minds like that?!
Phone up One44! They may be open. Otherwise, go for Society or Casablanca. Anyone else got any ideas?
We have decided on Wonder Bar reasons a very good deal?!?!?!?!?! Also it is much like 80's apparently and everyone knowa where it is! So wish us luck on Tuesday night. I hope everyone has a good one!!!!
Cool, but bear in mind that it's a very small club. It'll be a squash.
Well we had an absolutely fab time!!!!! Wonder Bar was packed! Squish wasn't the word but the vibe was brilliant. The bus there was fantastic but going back up the hill well it rained, and took 30 minutes extra. Thanks scouts for all your help!!!
Stoked you had a good time!
Speaking about clubs, I am sitting here reminiscing about L.T.P, Club Millionaire (opposite Chicago's, the Twilight Zone (for under 18's), Shunter's, Kangoe's. Usually followed by a few S'dumo burgers at Chicken Licken Point Road! The good old days!
Haven;t heard LTP mentioned for a while. I got thrown out of there once for throwing a half full beer at my mate from the bus, aah those sheep with their flashing eyes...
As for The Station, The Rift, Retros, Shunters, these names, once the best clubs ever, are now synonymous with "ballie"
Sorry for me!!
Please drop me a line if you wish Jeggerjay.
We might have a few things in common?
Like how to open another L.T.P. !
Remember Denise Britz and Dudley Haskins?
How about a site devoted to this!
Please people write and contact me about Millys and London Town pub at the Palm Beach Gillespie?
I was instrumental in the forming and opening of ltp.
To open another one would take finance.
replyplease if still active?
I remember the era and the clubs you mention with great fondness. I was living and working in Durban from 1990 to 93 and I used to hang out in Bonkers,Shunters, the ill fated Santa Fe that went on to be Joe Cools. We also used to go to Cocoa de Mers down at Umhlangs up the coast. I went to CC's once whic i thought was brilliant although not particularly well attended. We even drove down to some place called the palladuim, a real plush joint in the middle of nowhere. We had to laugh as we were the only white folks in the whole joint!!! I look back on my time in Durban with great fondness and I miss it still just as much now as I when i left 15 years ago. i know much will have changed but I hope one day to return my not as a clubber but more as a middle aged guy without too much middle age spread. Regards Paul
PS do you remember Larry and the Lounge Lizzards at Shunters?
It's not listed under best clubs but rather under other which is not editable, however a spin off from the Old but not forgotten Roman Lounge this is really an upgrade that needs complementing.
From a bar to a fully fledged niteclub, it's decor is superbly better, it's size is considerably larger (currently in the process of becoming 2 stories)a huge dance floor, GOOD sound, funky vibe and music from the good old commercial days to funky house. They have also changed there DJ line up & style of music for the better.
This is one gay (straight friendly) club, to go to (where else as there are no others worth mentioning as 330 & Axis are closed), that seems to be helping change the gay lifestyle & entertainment in Durban for the better. They have a lot to offer & with all the upcoming events (celebrity evenings & Theme evenings & shows) this is definately a place to look for to upgrade the poor entertainment & nitelife that Durban has to offer. As it is the Gay community in Durban is very withdrawn, so maybe this is the start to greater things to come for all of you out there.
yeah, i know one of the dj's from the lounge, and she rates the new place.
I also remember the spot when it was called Barcode [where I guest dj'd at a series of parties by Lapiz Lazuli about 2 yrs ago]
Really nice space for a club...
and yes Jakes agree with you, excellent to see, especially in this highly conservative society we live in [eg the bigotted debates around the proposes law to legalise gay and lesbian marriages]
THIS HAS NOW IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS BECOME A PLACE NOT TO GO. SERIOUSLY PEOPLE, THE RIF RAF THAT HANGS OUT THERE THESE DAYS IS SOMETHING ELSE. MY FRIEND AND I WERE DRUGGED AND ROBBED THERE ON FRIDAY NIGHT. NOT BY GAY PEOPLE BUT THE STRAIGHT RIFRAF COMING THERE JUST TO DO THAT TO INNOCENT PEOPLE. WE HAD TO BE ESCOURTED TO OUR CAR AS WE WERE IN A STATE OF SHOCK. IT WAS DISGUSTING
although ive been in durban for a while now, i havent been out much newhere at all. when i was in jhb they had a good lot of clubs tht played good music. I wanted to know which clubs in durban play music or have an atmosphere that just lets u feel free and have fun and the music just makes u want to dance all day and night. i am finishing exams next week and lets just say i "want to go wild"....
dude, what kind of music are you after? There are plenty of clubs catering to different styles. I assume from you saying you "want to go wild" that you mean dance music... somewhere like Tilt?
Check out the Real Estate Agents, details in the "upcoming events" section.
I can recommend The Lounge @ 226 Stamford Hill road.
They have a wide variety of styles of music depending on which DJ is playing that evening.
yo 101 - seems you wanna get back to bass-ics
agree ...for me Tilt is the tightest club in Durbs for a wikkid wild partee
tight sound-system, and partee ppl indahouse
put ya hands up in the air-air, put your hands up in the air-air, put your hands up in the air-air....
[you know the rest...aiiight !]
54 no votes,lol.
Hey i heard wonderbar is beeing changed into a strip joint...can any1 confirm.
Also heard that! Sheesh I wonder!
Can anyone tell me where can I hire a foam machine in Durban for a foam party. This is ridiculous, nowhere in Durban can I find one !!
