AlexDurban Christian punk band, Not The Majority, take a moment to introduce themselves and talk a bit about what it's like to be a Christian punk in our fair city...
Background stuff:
Since: We’ve been around since late 2002.
Band: Alex Rodriguez-guitar, BGV’s
Ryan Edwards- drums, BGV’s
Rob Garret-base
Luke Jordaan-guitar, vox
Background musical influences:
We all come from different musical background which has influenced our style somewhat. Alex likes the old school metal and punk e.g. Deliverance. Rob likes more upbeat fun punk/ska e.g. Greenday, Five Iron Frenzy. Ryan started off listening to Lagwagon style SoCal punk but really enjoys diversity and has been dabbling in emo of late. Luke enjoys it fast e.g. Pennywise, Dogwood, Rise Against.
Why we play:
We get our inspiration to write and play from simply living. With this, comes our belief that Jesus Christ has opened our eyes to the things we never use to see or we took for granted. It’s amazing how hard it is to express yourself with simple words in a song, when really words can’t describe how thankful and passionate it we are towards the Lord.
LukeStraight Edge?
As far as being labeled straight edge I’d say we fall outside of that. My understanding of straight edge means no drugs, alcohol, a positive lifestyles and positive lyrics. We don’t believe in subscribing to a set of rules or norms that will categorize us according to man. We play our songs because we believe that we honor God in using our talents. The moment we start thinking that we are pretty darn good at music or some really hot band, we have to take a step back and re-focus. We believe the Bible is the inspired word of God and thus live according to those standards.
Yes, we love playing punk rock, and yes we think that musically we are alright (though far from great). But ultimately it’s not about NTM as a band but rather NTM as a vessel to showcase Gods undying love and forgiveness to everyone. That’s the message that we bring and what we would die for. Label us however you want…
What’s Durban like for a bunch of Christian punkers?
Playing in Durban as any underground band will tell you is difficult to say the least. Few interested listeners and even fewer places to play. For us we love supporting other bands at shows where people enjoy punk rock. We don’t really care where we play or who with. More often than not the crowds are pretty tough, I honestly think it’s because some people get offended by our lyrics and thus stop themselves from enjoying the music.
One of my most memorable gigs was supporting Lowprofile and some other bands at the Winston last year; the crowd was just interested in having a good time without worrying about egos or anything else like that.
RobAs far as most punks subscribing to an atheistic philosophy, I feel people should make up there own minds and not believe popular doctrine. If someone says to me they are an atheist I find it hard to believe that they actually think everything came about per chance. How the crod can you open your eyes in the morning and look over a calm, blue, ocean framed by a crystal clear skyline, while watching the sun rise red and not wonder at its magnificence and how awesome the detail is? Detail like that doesn’t happen by chance in nature, it was created by the same God who knows every hair on your head.
I know there will be people reading this and thinking it’s a load of poo. Well, I really don’t have all the answers…. all I can say is that Christ has made this life of mine worth living.

I love the way you say "people get offended by our lyrics"! I can only but imagine what they must be!
I'm not into religion, but I do listen to music that is probably satanic... so I guess I shouldn't be prejudice against Christian ones, cause that would just be wrong!
It's all about the music. As long as you're good and not overly preachy, then it's sweet. Thanks for the background info..
Hey look who it is!
First of all, this band is comprised of some of the raddest guys you'll ever meet.
Great musicians too. In fact, in my opinion they are in the top 5 punk bands in the whole of South Africa. And I've always admired that the gigs are not what most would call "preachy". It's four dudes playing what they love and singing with passion about what they believe in, which I'd say is an essential factor in any band.
And I listen to a VAST variety of styles!
So-Cal punk, skate punk, death metal, emo, alternative, neo-folk, power metal, acoustic...
pretty much anything except for hip hop, dance, and R 'n B. Why? Not because I'm narrow minded. It's beacuse it's craaaap!
Neo-folk ?!
Like Badly Drawn Boy, for example
I dig them! Hour of the bewilderbeest is the album I got.
I thought you were just making up genres!
Also like Bright Eyes and M Ward...folksy alt country sounding.
Cool must check it out!
've never really understood the whole christian music thing i must be honest. And when i hear of christian punk bands my mind goes "WTF"? it just doesnt seem to relate. call me a cynic, but christian music to me is like that concert in hillcrest seemed to be about, an alternate version or praise or pray, how does that tie up with punk??
Punk is dead my friend. Or at the very least, dilluted.
The style of punk that NTM play is based on So-Cal melodic punk which had it's heyday between 1995 and 2001. The sound of the music is actually closer to Iron Maiden than Black Flag. I'd say they are more punk than you'd think because like the punk bands that came before them they are singing about what they believe in, which is contrary to the beliefs of most of the young people who are likely to be listening to them.
I'm sure you've heard of Black Metal? It's a genre that is well known for occult, offensive or sacreligious lyrics and artwork. Now have you heard of the lesser-known White Metal?
Same music, Chirstian lyrics.
Haven't heard of "White Metal", but it sounds a little self-contradictory. I thought one of the lures of Metal music was it characterised by angry disestablishmentarianism (if that is a word). Surely that can't work for a Christian band. Especially the "anger" part.
you right dean, a huge attraction for most punks/metalheads to their music genre is the anger and frustration the music portrays. We also have frustrations and believe it or not we get pretty angry, but our anger isn't directed at anti-establisment for example, its directed at other issues close to our hearts. So yea it is possible for a christian punk band to have anger.
Love these guys!
