Napalma Set To Bring The House Down

Napalma Set To Bring The House Down
Submitted by the_looking_glass on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 21:03

A couple of months ago, on my way back from the beach, I got a call about some Brazilian group called Napalma performing at the old Glass Magic premises in Windermere Road. The rumble in my stomach was begging me to go home and get some food, but something inside told me I'd be sorry. So, for once I followed my head instead of my hunger, to a show that almost brought the house down (literally).

I've always been fond of Brazilian music, but just Cornell's glass work on display that night was enough to reassure me that I had made the right choice. I could marvel at that stuff for hours. Although a small venue, the chilled soundtrack out on the deck and smiling faces had me sold already. I had no idea what to expect, after taking a glance at the guys shuffling around brass instruments, djembe drums, laptops and all kinds of percussion.

Having found out that we still had to wait an hour or two for the show, we missioned down the road for some pizza (I had to crack eventually), and by the time we returned, the small deck where we were chilling out on earlier, had filled up impressively. I was expecting something along the lines of Brazilian trip-hop, Bossa Nova, or a lounge kinda vibe, but what I was confronted with had me, and everyone else in sight, jumping around like that deck was on fire. Needless to say, their sound is very dance-orientated, fusing electronic music with that raw, Brazilian, carnival feel.

There were two guys playing djembe drums, a trumpeter, a dread-locked vocalist and the producer on a laptop, running the popular “Reason” music production software, controlled by a hardware interface. Absolutely incredible. From their energetic stage presence to their vibrant crowd interactivity, they seem to leave you with your jaw hanging at your feet. A few of us honestly believed that the deck was gonna collapse with all that jumping going on (remember, s.o.l?) and even the band looked nervous at one stage. Our friendly boys in blue eventually arrived to try put an end to the commotion, but they must have enjoyed it, because normally when you ignore a warning from the cops you get slapped, yet even after several warnings, the show carried on and without force, only stopped when the band was ready to stop.

Well they're back in the country, bound to cause a stir wherever they go. Napalma do this for a living I hear, traveling the world making music. It seems that they pull crowds no matter what continent they're on, not just by their mind blowing shows, but also from their excellent drumming circles surrounding their gigs. For all of you who enjoy drum circles, keep an eye out for stuff going down at the stables or any drum circle featuring these guys, but beware, if you have a rhythm that you've grown quite fond of, its gonna get permanently Brazilianised!

I really can't do them justice with this article, so you're gonna have to come and see for yourself at the Glass Magic Castle on Saturday the 7th October. Apparently they performed at the Awesome Africa festival over the weekend, which I was very sorry to miss. If anyone went, please let us know how it was!

All pictures are courtesy of their site www.napalma.com.br, which once translated by Google, reveals awesome video clips, music downloads and tour photos. (These guys have been everywhere).

Thinking back, I remember someone from Durbs jamming djembe with them, and come to think of it, was probably Lappies. If it was you, you gonna be jamming with them again now that they're back?

Definately gonna jam with em... Dunno if it was me last time as I only did a drum circle jam at the stables with em but was at the glass magic gig. That deck was rocking!!! Was sposed to jam at Awesome with em but they were a bit sketched cos of their gear getting scooped in Rotterdam. Seeing them today about rehearsals and sorting them some more gigs if I can.

Playing as much as I can with whoever I can lately so you could probably call me a drumslut soon... Jammed with the Feeva and Farryl at awesome and was hoping to do the hat trick with Napalma but alas, maybe next time. Cant do the full time band thing since THC cos of the lighties and business and wot so when I get a gap, believe I fill it...

Pethond! These dudes rock hard. If you ever saw THC just think of THC on steroids and you got NAPALMA. You gonna b there Wes???

guys, i caught the awesom Napalma at the Awesome africa festival this weekend. it was on sunday evening in a tightly packed room, and lemme tell ya guys, this weekends show is gonna rock steady!!!

i chatted to Cid, one of the lead end drummers. the band was realli bummed when their laptop with all their backing tracks and back-ups was stolen. they even thort of heading str8 back to brasil

thankfulli they pursued on, and had two practice sessions before sundays' performance.
the wheels a lil rusty, but boi oh boi. they were the only band (including the mighty Afro-Cuban All Stars)that got the room up and dancing.

i saw girls and boys shaking their asses like it was 2006 (which it is)

if you saw them play at BBB or the Glass Shop on Windies last time round, then i know i'll see you this saturday

if you havent, then guys, you gotta get your dancing boots dusted off.

lets see you baby, shakin that ass>>>>

Having an instrument nabbed sux. But imagine having your laptop stolen if you're a producer? Not only do you have to resource programs but you have to rewrite all those songs! Thieving bastards. Very interested to hear how he's compensated.

See you all there!

BTW can someone PM me directions /address of Glass Magic Castle and set times if possible - being new to durban n all...schweet

Once upon a time I was a proud user of a laptop...and then I wasn't. Didn't get nicked, which would at least have been a way of having closure (sob!) but it just totally crapped out - the infamous HP battery outcrappery of legend and lore. You'd turn it on, it would be humming along and then - ZAM! - the screen would go all lumo zigzags and then...pfft..........a quiet death. Plug it into the wall, wiggle stuff, lalalala...sweet blow cherry. Google it, you'll see I wasn't alone. The worst part of course was that it was second hand and thus, of course and obviously, out of warranty (oh the pain! I couldn't go on. But I did. Believe it cos iz troo.)
Oh, what a pretty paperweight...oh, the heartbreak. Funnily enough, a PC that cost about one-tenth of the price of the laptop is still trucking on, admittedly it's a bit senile in its old age but still kicking. Grrr.

No prob partychief

If youre travelling m13 towards PMB, take hillcrest turnoff. Go right into old main raid. About halfway between that turnoff and heritage market, glass magic is on your right. 24a old main road. Its just before the shell garage. Look out for the loads of cars parked on the side of the main road. You better come or I'll klik your ass!

(sorry to hear about the laptop) what you gonna do for sequencing now? you can always buy my 307...

And whatta partee it was!!!!

if anybody reading this knew about the party but didnt arrive.....

u gonna kik urselves.

this party rocked tight from intro to out-sequence

NaPalma drove the enrgetic crowds to new levels of dancefloor commitment, stretching my ear drums and hamstrings tot he max.

it was sweaty, it was dirrty, it was the equivalent of a aerobix workout from hell, with angels to guide and direct us.

sumbuddi, tell me when was the last time u heard drummers band their beats for so long at that intensity??

How bizarre ...
After reading about these guys (and I haven't been on this site for a while) a friend asked me to go with her to Bean Bags for some party .... and there they were ..... so strange!!

They were awesome though!! Will definately be looking out for them in the future, and of course I have told everyone who will listen to me about how amazing they are. So cool that the singer guy came down onto the dance floor and jammed with us. I'm new to the live music scene so maybe I've just missed it, but I've never seen someone do that! Was really impressed!
