I Just Didn't Know-Know-Know
Submitted by the_looking_glass on Sunday, April 1, 2007 - 15:21

SeakeSeakeOn Friday night I missioned up to Hillcrest, to what I understood was going to be a debut event for a new group of party animals, “NONONO”. Turns out there's nothing new about them, nor their eager following...

Arriving at the doors of the Glass Magic Castle, with the perception of seeing these “new” promoters in action, I was met by what seemed a hefty cover charge of R40 for a debut gig. Taking a glance at the crowd of about 9 or so inside, I smelt a bit of a dud, thinking I was probably gonna hear good music, but ultimately end up paying just to chat to the small group outside (thinking back to a really dud party at the Willowvale hotel). Well, I wasn't going to let that happen again, so I had a big fat whining session, and we agreed on a better admission fee.

After an hour or so, people started arriving. And arriving. And arriving. And so the icecap of this “dud party” began to melt. As positive as this was, I started to feel my tail creeping between my legs more and more with each person walking inside. When I overheard conversations of previous epic parties and dedicated followers, I suddenly felt horribly uneducated.

Powerful sets by Hedmekanik, Mixen Vixen and Leo packed a responsive dancefloor, ranging from synth pop and old skool rock, to indie, electroclash and even a remix of the Sex Pistols' “God Save The Queen”. By this stage an apology was well overdue, and once delivered, I had the best party I've had this year. But that was only the start...

I'd heard that there was a local live act called Seake causing a bit of a stir, and as an electronic performer myself, I get inspired when I see someone using different methods to produce music. Well, when I saw their table of gear I was like a kid at the ice cream shop.

The foundation of their performance is a music production and recording software package called Ableton Live, which they have running on a laptop connected to VARIOUS hardware controllers, like keyboards, touch screens, velocity pads and even a computer joystick! So they create and control pretty much everything you hear, and they have lots of fun doing it. Their set has quite a minimal/techno feel to it and borders on tech/electro house...if that makes any sense? Basically if you like shaking your ass to 4/4 dance grooves these guys will show you a thing or two.

So I guess the question to ask here, is when you arrive at the door and something tells you you're walking into a dud, what do you do? Do you cut your losses and high tail it outta there, or do you take a chance and see what happens, even if it means potentially sitting outside chatting to the ones and twos?

I'll tell you this much, if I had walked away, not only would I have robbed myself of a refreshing, pounding party, but also I wouldn't have discovered this wild bunch of DJ's and producers. For those uneducated like me, go to the next NONONO party at whatever the cost, because if you don't you'll wish you did...

they let you (out) your c[a]ge again??? lol we had a great party, i forgot to mention the uncanny photographer tho...

Well kliktrak, its plain to see that I should have gone for the sony ericson instead of the d-900. all my photos stank and low and behold yours were great. Although the steady-shot must be great, cos i dont remember you standing that straight by the time seake came on... nor me for that matter!

Good party guys

Glad you enjoyed it, Looking Glass, and it's a good thing you got photo's too, cos it ain't happening again anytime soon.

To those who made it, thanks very much, its people like you who make it worthwhile. Thank you, to all of you.

Am I gonna use this opportunity to bitch about the fact that so many people called and said they would use the taxi service? And then didn't take the taxi? Even though there WERE roadblocks? And they ended up driving drunk? And some of them got busted?
No, no, no... I wouldn't do that.

Am I gonna use this opportunity to bitch about all those who made effusive statements about how badly Durban needs events of this nature and how they couldn't understand why people don't support them more? And then these same people stayed home?
Nah, I wouldn't do that either.

We had a great time, but then we always do. It was a cracker. Seake blew the roof off. Impressive stuff.

It's a funny old town, Durban, and the people are...well, they would make good compost, I'm sure.

and yay behold, the nay nay nay sayers, shall be struckdown with a plague of plasticity and melt before the heavenly flames of the divine underground, whereupon the chosen blessed few, the mighty throng of party people, shall gather and go forth to spread the gospel of hedonism and full-on-pardy-hardy-to-the-break-o-dawn

The GMC is closed for Splashy as far as I know as The Mighty Dread will be hosting the Hilltop Camp up there...on top of the hill...but as for the NOcubed, jislaaik, my magtig and eish, we'll see how long it takes the pain to fade and then we'll no doubt get a spark in our ears and barrel on into anuvva, bruvva. Any suggestions for guest acts? Venue? Jeez, that didn't take long...

To all those of you who're hitting Splashy I say - You lucky fuckers, hava goowan. I'm saving for Sonar in Barcelona in June, which is, in my inestimable opinion, worth missing Splashy for.
Have one for me.

I wish that I could blame it on the depletion of my serotonin levels, but the sad fact is that it's legitimate pissedoffitis. Ah, well..what to do? Roll with the punches, keep your chin up and think of Spain....yebo baba...ten weeks....and fiesta fiesta fiesta.
Bloody marvellous.

ya thats napalma for you. when they first came to durbs, i had a drum session with them and my rythm's never been the same since. cant believe there were 2 awesome parties at the same venue in two consecutive nights. Well, apparently its the last for a while. cornell mentioned something about closing the castle for 2 months or something.

Didn't even get a chance to go down to trip hazard's gig. Any feedback on that anyone?
