The popular battle of the band format where 25 bands compete in a 'survivor' type format. Bands try and get one of three immunities to proceed to the next round. It gets tricky when they can't get the same immunity two heats in a row. Filled with drama, backstabbing and long lasting friends and alliances. Very rock 'n roll!
I Like Tight Sweaters @ Society

Just Jinjer? Jeez remember them. Bluff boys, if I'm not mistaken!
And the first (I think) concert at Timeball! Apparently that place will become the centre of entertainment when the area is up and running.
Take a drive down to the Point and get your mind blown away...it's a seriously impressive project, more so because they've preserved a lot of old buildings and tarted them up. My girlfriend the ex-Capetonian reckons it's way more impressive than the Waterfront in terms of public spaces, and she should know. One more reason to be stoked about this one-seahorse town we call home...

Just Jinger are pants....
Some people are like a Slinky.....not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you shove them down the stairs.
I love that expression. Pants...when o's are toyi-toying they tune 'pantsi'...maybe there's some connection between the two.

Yes, I couldn't agree more....the world is smaller then you think when you realise that the toyi-toyi chants are actually them equating their situation with a pair of stale Jockeys...lmao!!

Has answered my call and sent me this media-release thingy about the night...
"As the flyer would suggest, we are pitching this night to the more sophisticated, creative, music-wise clientele in Durban. Durban is summed up by 2 bands and music genres - Goldfish playing their house set,and Watershed playing on East Coast every hour of the day. Well its time we exposed it to something else. 'I Like Tight Sweaters' night is a pitch at playing sexy electro fuelled music mixed with those tracks that you just dont hear enough - We staying away from the House Contingency and exposing little minded Durban to something on an international level. Society has been synomous with its cuisine in breaking the mold, its only rightly so it follows suit with paving the way in music.
Also to be noted is our Wednesday night evenings, with half price sushi and playing cutting edge indie rock and electronica. Burn cannot be the only alternative outlet - if it is, then Durban is in a sorry state of affairs as far as rock music is concerned - coz right now the world is exploding and salivating for rock and electronic tinged music, whilst Durban is playing the same tunes i heard when i walked into The Rift 10 or so years ago, and falling over themselves to hear Funky (the word should really be retired never to be heard again, lets face it, it all makes us want to cringe) House. Lets not insult the Durban population anymore - its time to upgrade."
Sophisticated electro tunes and a ban on Funky House...from Society...will wonders never cease? I'd be in there like a hot polar bear into an iced lake if I wasn't going to Busi Mhlongo / Phuzikhemisi / Madala Kunene 2moro at the Playhouse. But that's a turn-up for the books, get down there and support it, people, or else it'll all be cheese and we'll only have ourselves to blame.

So Society are doing this fine thing tonight - and I've just got word that the legendary Meanboy Roy will be dropping a 5-star set at BBB from 9pm till late tonight, which basically means a world-class DJ doing what he does best - spinning the finest, rarest, meanest and tidyest tunes you will hear this side of the equator. HIGHLY Recommended. Jeez, doesn't rain, it pours.

nice one
Meanboy makes a rare appearance, thats a real treat !
also cool news if Society is indeed electro-trashing the durban scene...
hmmm maybe time to dust off the ol' 303 and work towards a societally acceptable live gig...

I'm really stoked that Society has decided to break the mold a bit and bring alternative style music to a different target market of people.
Their comment here does over-simplify the Durban music scene a little bit, and doesn't take into account the 'underground' vibe.
However, this must be put into context. What I think they are saying is that from the perspective of the mainstream club scene, indie rock and electro is not represented enough. This I fully agree with, and honestly the best advice I can give to Society, if they want to make a change, is to 'hang in there', and support local acts (which I think they have been doing very nicely)! People WILL start to realise that music is evolving.
If you build it, they will come.
but lets see the support first...have been to a couple of their sushi indie night things and the turnout has been abyssmal. The dj plays to about 5 people (most of them iron fist staff cos its a sponsored gig!) And its GREAT sushi - half price too! Beats simply fish byt miles.
Diggin the fact that theyre willing to fill that niche that is sorely lacking here cos Burn is seriously sucking since they moved - im sorry for those who disagree - but us who used to go for a fun jam at sideburn where only indie/electro was played are now reduced to hearing 1 hour of decent stuff on a wed night...and then left with the same bloody burn playlist thats been going for about 5 yrs. no thanks
Society's new initiative--- very cool. But come on, please dont box us into either supporters of Goldfish or Watershed. And I also find
"exposing little minded Durban to something on an international level" a tad offensive. We aren't all a bunch of ignorant radio followers, so to make out like they gonna pioneer something that our naive ears have never been exposed to is a little opinionated. I do agree that the scene needs exposure and I'll raise a glass to them for actually trying to do something about it.
Something Id like to raise is the whole drink promotion thing that goes down there. I went to see Goldfish at their last gig. There were Jameson posters everywhere, and although I do enjoy the whiskey, it is expensive, so instead I drink J&B. When I ordered my J&B at the bar I was kindly told that no other whiskeys would be served due to the Jameson promotion. Fair enough, but what was the promotion? There was no discounted price on the product, an entry into a competition or anything like that. Just somebody forcing me into buying a more expensive whiskey. Can anyone justify this for me?

Surprise attack by the kings of JHB hardcore----
REASON TO LIVE!!!
This show has been organised last minute as part of their Cape tour has been cancelled so they have decided to swing by Durban on the way back home..
CROSSINGPOINT will be joining in the mayhem for what is sure to be a mind boggling night of hardcore unity, pride, and devastation!
These hxc stalwarts just returned from a USA tour in July.. Witness their crushing rhythms taken to a whole new level!!
They wont be playing any shows until at least December or January 2007 so here is your last chance to get the blood pumping in your ears.
Tell EVERYONE. this is going to be SPECIAL.
This lady has got the voodoo and she's got the shimmy-shake. Quite an experience, to see her in full cry on Sat. nite accompanied by the full complement of chorus girls, accordionist, etc etc. She's been receiving treatment for breast cancer and was apparently not as vigorous as usual, but she was still lively enough to get a packed Playhouse auditorium on its feet. Damn fine way to start off a Saturday nite.
Don't know who Busi Mhlongo is? Shame on you, you musical hermit crab - get thee informed!

Just to let everyone know:
IT WAS AWESOME (yet again)
These two bands never fail to amaze me...and make me rock out like a crazy child.
