Dress Codes

Dress Codes
Submitted by capdog on Sunday, January 14, 2007 - 10:43

So my friends and I were denied entry to a rather empty-looking Society this last Saturday night, because for some reason they have decided to implement a selective dress code. If you're not wearing long pants, your money ain't good enough for them these days I'm afraid.

It's a pity because Society never used to stop people from dressing practically, they were always one of the 'good ones' on my list of places that allowed a bit of freedom in your choice of attire. Something that I thought was their strongest point - despite being an upper class 'high society' venue, they were down to earth, relaxed and interested in diverse expression. Every time I've been there, it's been in walkshorts.

According to the guy at the door, "it's Saturday, maybe on Tuesday or Wednesday we allow shorts but not tonight". "Well buddy", I thought to myself, "this place is pretty damn empty so I don't see how it being Saturday makes such a big difference!". They should be trying to get as many customers as possible.

What's the big deal? Well, for reasons of pure practicality I point-blank refuse to go out in 30 degree heat / 80% humidity in anything other than a breezy pair of walkshorts.

Why the hell should guys have to wear hot, bothersome jeans when it's so uncomfortable outside? And girls get away with short skirts and open shoes, or pretty much whatever they want.

Screw that. This is Durban summer, not the London West End or Hollywood Boulevard. Clubs that try be all 'upper-crust' by enforcing dress codes end up with a room full of carbon-copied jocks, all wearing black leather shoes, blue jeans and short-sleeved, white button-up shirts with pinstripe vertical lines.

It's like being back at school, with everyone in the same clubbing uniform, and it's lame. What is the point of forcing all the guys to look the same? Does it somehow improve everyone's experience at the venue?

Clubs that allow the freedom of expression end up with a myriad of different clothing fashions and styles inside, and it's great to see different people wearing the kind of clothes their personalities require to be comfortable, from surfers in shorts and slops, to arty types in eccentric suits and the latest outrageous catwalk styles.

It's all about dressing the way you feel.

So strike Society off the list (at least, on a Saturday, or when the fancy takes them). Who does that leave? Well, not many I'm afraid. Burn, Bean Bag, Taco Zulu, Spiga's, Thunderroad Rock Diner all still accept practicality as the dress code. If you agree with me and want to increase that list, start by refusing to go out in anything but walkshorts, like I do. Argue with the bouncers if they give you grief. Make it known their policies are lame.

Of course, I have to pay tribute to the number one offender of the 'jock' dress code, Casablanca. The bouncers there remind me of school prefects, checking to make sure your black leather shoes are polished sufficiently, that your collar is nicely folded and that your hair is nicely combed. Bullshit, I say!

Ya , I agree. Why should girls get to wear whatever the hell they like , when us guys are restricted to wear hot anoying and very often uncomfortable jeans , especially in this heat....You are right Capdog...its utter BULLSHIT.

And then these girls wonder why sumtimes us guys , dont feel like staying out at a club all night long,,,,,Id love to see if girls complained if they had to stand around and dance for hours on end with 'a button up shirt, jeans and smart black shoes on' that kill your feet and give you blisters.

Anyway,,,,I say , If clubs keep going the way they are at the moment , with such strict dress codes for us guys , then i say they should turn those places into high class reserants, coz thats all those clothes are good for 'sitting down and having sum expensive chow'

Clubs are meant to be places where you can go have fun and express yourself through your individual styles...And like you say 'there are very few places left that still let you do so.

Great article 'Exellent topic'

That's it exactly, I've always tried to pin down exactly what the feeling behind being told to go home and put on some shiny shoes was and now I know; school uniform.
I don't think the conformity angle is soley borne of "imagined(wishful more like) association" with clubs overseas though, because many foreign friends that visit, from the states to Germans and even India Indians always comment on how ridiculous it is that so many Durban clubs enforce the dress codes they do:

If they're trying to draw a "dress code:quality of patron" comparison then it's being done the wrong way. Trying to equate a pair of sneakers, branded boardies and vintage T to everyone's fav Bron-x, dockers and shirt says nothing about the person in the clothes. And whereas previously a line could've been drawn moentarily, the 2 'uniforms' will have similar price tags. With the trashy look most times being far more expensive.
Moreover, it is just a Durban thing, I never had dress issues with the clubs on Long Street and besides Manhattans in Jozi (owned by the same guy who runs Tiger), I've never had dress code issues there either.
I don't know what's worse though, being outrightly bounced for not fitting the dress code or being knocked an extra R50 at the door for dressing the way you want. Call me shallow but the thought of the Tiger bouncers taking a riot shield and baton to the pip still makes me smile...

I'll never come whack on an old school track.

Subject:  Fricken 'roid-heads...
one track mike's picture
Author:  one track mike
Date:  15 January, 2007 - 07:41

Ok sorry, this is slightly off-topic, but still related to the mindset of the way some clubs are run in this town.

On Friday night i found myself involved in a rather precarious situation - one which was ballhairs away from my face having reconstructive surgery attempted with a fist and no knife.

Some clubs (whose names DARE i mention)are claiming the right to the property beyond the inside of their club ie: the cars parked outside...I was promoting my upcoming event (at Panama Room) outside a well-known 'rave' club in Durbs and was ultimately surrounded by a couple 'roid-heads and two bouncers claiming i had no right to be there - not exactly in those words !!!
The bouncers were called to basically 'teach me a lesson' and somehow, strangely enough i was able, after about twenty minutes to talk my way out of the situation and be 'allowed to get in my car and leave queitly'...

I thought the days of these fucken meatheads running wild with their shrunken ballsacks and loaded guns had passed, since we're all a bit older now, but how naieve of me.

It's one thing to firstly think you have the right to public property and not welcome what in this world of business is known as 'competition' - but it's another matter altogether when it comes to how one deals with a situation. After realising (which was basically from the second i was approached) that these pricks weren't happy to just give me a slap on the wrist i withdrew and assured them i would leave immediately and not put flyers on 'their' cars ... but being civil and rational are two words these monkeys can't spell and it was impossible to reason with them.

Anyhow, this is not the only club that thinks the streets belong to them - BURN nightclub for fucksakes! If there's a club out there we should not be worried about it's BURN, but clearly not!! I have had agressive bouncers on my case for the same thing there - doing promo (flyers on publicly-parked cars) for an event that is not taking place there! How PATHETIC - and BURN doesn't even have one other alternative club in competition with them...

Who do these people think they are to stop people from attempting to make a success of their own endeavours on public property ??? If everybody were to run around threatening whoever dare to make a business out of the same thing they do the human race wouldn't exist!

Maybe they should get out of Durban into the real world and see what life is like outside of their egotistical little bubble.

Its people like this (and unfortunately there are many) that give Durban the conservative/backward/'jock' mentality that it has and makes me embarassed to say i'm from here.

We actually went through this whole argument with the Burn management in 2005. They claimed the right to the whole of Clark/Umbilo road! Bands were trying to promote their gigs by putting flyers on cars, and the carguards were told to stop them.

There was quite a fallout, MANY people spoke bad things about Burn for a long time. I don't think the rules have changed, but people got over it.

It's always so easy for them when on their own turf - a place nobody would dare serve as a witness out of fear of catching their next rest in the sugar-cane fields.

Thing is, what right do people have to fiddle with your car in the first place? I don't want anyone playing with my windscreen wipers, even if they are just placing flyers. Car Guards are there to protect your vehicle and should rightly stop anyone from interfering with it. Sure, hand flyers out - but don't screw with our cars.

Having said that, it does sound as though those bouncers went a bit overboard. Maybe they were trying to ensure you didn't return.

People putting flyers under wipers don't have time to 'fiddle' or play silly buggers with bits of cars, and a piece of paper will hardly ruin the resale value. It's not as though there are menacing posses of flyer gangs lurking in dark alleys, waiting to damage your car. After all the idea is get people interested, not piss them off.
Standing outside clubs, while tolerated in more liberated parts of the world, will only get you thumped down here in ye olde one-seahorse town Durbs.

There are very few avenues to market thru and the biggest of these is flyers. Apart from putting them in cofee shops and other such places that will allow them, vehicles seem to be the best bet. Now that the council wont let dj's and bands advertise their gigs on posters, what else is there left to do.

Cant say I wouldnt mind seeing one track mike having a new arsehole torn for him by a crowd of roid head bouncers but thats another story altogether that we will submit later. (he he he...)

You see, a little while ago 'the Lappies' was putting personalised flyers on cars down by Ushaka Point Rd advertising his well-muscled fingers and over-sized mouth(see his pic), particularly convenient for grazing on the under-carriage of carguards' fragrant foreskins..you know, like red-riding hood style: "all the bigger & better to knock one out for ya..."

...so anyway he gets into a situation he's never been in before: a girl molests him thinking he's a guy, as he's promoting himself on car windscreens, and since that day he gets very touchy when either ladies or flyers are mentioned.

If you would like to donate money to the "FIND LAPPIES A FEMALE LAY" foundation, you can mail me on this site...

And since most people wine when they receive sms' and wine when they have flyers on their cars, what right do they ever have to moan about the lack of quality gigs goin' down in Dirtbin if they never gonna know 'bout it ?

yip - in that case i would get bummed. Flyering is a job for an asshole - it really sucks.

It's a job i can't even pay for somebody to do for me because it doesn't get done properly...

You may as well be approaching people with second-hand toilet paper for sale as far as the way some people treat you when attempting to hand over a flyer...

It's always at a time when you least want to be doing it - like between 11 and 12 at night, when most cars are at a venue and when you are most drunk !

The hit rate is soooo low it's hard to discipline one's self to go out there and do the deed...

Have to agree with you about the flyer, sms and e mail thing. If people dont read the paper or get a mail or sms or come out of a club to find their car draped in the latest fashion of event advertising then how the fuk they gonna know where and what is happening in this little seaside town. As it is our peeps are very complacent and its common to hear the comments " what jol is that, triphazard? Nah i think I will get a coupla quarts of label and a bankie of poisons and just veg on the couch"

In other places there are dedicated markets that hang to find out where and when the next jol is happening but not in good ol durbs.

Shorts are cooler in summer and too cool in winter and jeans or longs are good for winter but suck in summer. Anyone feel like wearing jeans last nite? At 9 o clock last night I was still sweating sitting at home in SHORTS with no shirt on. So as far as putting longs on so that I can go out in style, BAH HUMBUG TO THAT SUGGESTION. Someone who is going to be uncomfortable wearing longs in the Durban summer just to look "cool" needs their head examined. But then again reptiles are cold blooded. ;)

Lappies has touched on a point. Our 'smart' form of dress is completely impractical because it is copied from the European ancestors. Look at school uniforms. Compulsory dark blazers, long pants and a tie in a tropical climate? Is that clever?

No, it's moronic. Kids have to suffer for the sake of what we deem is 'proper' dress, a throwback from European settlers who came from the frozen wastelands of England, Netherlands, etc..

In the desert, Arabs wear practical clothes, same goes for most traditional dress, it's just the smart thing to do.

They have opened Fashion TV cafes, yes, you read correctly, and they are taking over, world domination I tell you!! And only the "elite" go there and there is FTV plastered on all the "plasma screens" everywhere you look, especially for the ladies who may get a little "tipsy" and forget to stick their fingers down their throats, NOW, they have FTV to remind them throughout the evening! Clever! Its ridiculous. There is a red carpet and everything. So, you can just imagine the dress code. Ridiculous I tell you, absolutley insane. No, I have not been there....ever

Kiddles's picture
Author:  Kiddles

Pretty long topic eh capdog, but now for a look not from the bouncers or clubbers, but from the owners.

What I have learned over the seconds is that the dress code is enforced to attract a specific target market. It is a known marketing ploy, if you want to attract the formal upper class citizens who are able to order the sea food platter for R300 which is on your menu you need to make the establishment appealing to that class. Thus, long pants, buttoned up shirts, the shoes and don't forget the soft background noise of Frank Sinatra.

The clubs are being ridiculous in their dress code! personally I think they are trying to pick up the "class" of the venue. Capdog, another survey into Society and please compare their drinks prices from now and later. If you want another class of club you open a new one, trying to "upgrade" it will as seen lose the original customers who thought they had found a safe house off the streets of durbs eg : us, the heroic clubber, and inevitably even when you do have everything in order with attracting a higher target market there will always be that sentiment in the gossip, " You know this used to be a dingy club" and certain topics you would imagine being discussed in the movie " The Queen".

Settled, we're not attracted, and its their decision if they want us back.

This country is going to the dogs...and I am that dog!
