Calling All Action Figure Collectors

Calling All Action Figure Collectors
Submitted by Breetai on Monday, April 3, 2006 - 08:04

Action figure collecting is alive and well in Durban, and if you collect action figures too, you are not alone!

I'm a fully fledged Toy Nerd, and proud of it.

I live in Durban, and I've collected action figures for over 10 years now, and I've always been frustrated with the unavailability of my favorite action figure ranges in South African toy stores.

In fact I became so fed-up with the situation, that I decided to open my own Action Figure hobby site.

I specialize in Star Wars (new and old), Thundercats, Masters of the Universe, and any other 80's action figures.

At first glance, my website looks like a toyshop, and even though the "for sale" section is growing by the day, my intention is not to make money off the toys, but rather to expose local enthusiasts to more of the toys that our overseas counterparts get to see every day. In fact my website is just an excuse for me to buy more action figures than I usually do!

You see, this is a hobby of mine, and every toy that is for sale on my website is unique, and is considered to be a part of my own personal collection. That is why I only keep one of each. But if you want it, it is up for grabs.

The best part is that you can get involved, and get a chance to show off your own collection on my website, no matter how big or small!

The most important aspect of my website is unique to South Africa: The Toy Museum.
Here you can learn about vintage figures from the 80's and it will help you to put together a more complete collection of your own.

The Museum section I'm currently working on is the Masters of the Universe section. All those childhood memories come flooding back when you see these classic toys from the 80's. Castle Grayskull, He-Man, Orko, Man-At-Arms, Stinkor, Beast-Man, Skeletor, they're all there!

Put down that playstation for a bit, and come visit the TOYMASTER's wonderful world of action figures for a while at www.ultimatetoynerd.co.za

Dude that is awesome, such memories coming back to me! I have an entire bag of toys sitting in the top of my cupboard somewhere, which has been collecting dust for about 16 years now. He-man, Thundercats, all those...

On a side note, have you watched those cartoons recently? They are pretty shocking, so 80's and really low budget! Haha, can't believe I used to watch them religiously.

Cool! - You wanna sell? I'm desperately looking for 80's goodies!

Yea I have watched them recently - I have a coupla old He-man tapes.
They look pretty old now, but I still rate them over most of the un-imaginative rubbish that kids have to watch thesedays.
"BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL!!" Classic stuff.

Thundercats, however holds up really well, though. They just don't do hand drawn animation like that nowadays. And the characters rock!
The 80's was a special time - I love the old fasion sense and "Adam ant" style make-up on their faces.

I remember how SABC used to interrupt my Thundercats and Robotech with tennis every now and then. I would throw a fit. Plus I actuallu think we only got the first season of Thundercats in SA.

"Thunder...Thunder...Thundercats Ho!!"

Must...have ...new Thundercats DVD Box-set.

Yeah I'll take a look for them tomorrow night, I'm pretty sure they haven't been thrown out. You probably have all of them though.

80's was indeed a special time. I'm glad it's over though. Hehe.

I always assumed they cleaned themselves!

But my wife will disagree...
The actual trick is to make sure that none of them fall over and create an action figure avalanche!

Everything that has transpired has done so according to my design!

Right, I've just about had it up to here with these thieving gypsy bastards, I'm telling you, this is the limit of my patience! I've been collecting these godforsaken Asterix figurines (of which I have a 'full' set) that come with Kinder Suprise eggs. But the BASTARDS that sell these things (the agents I mean)- they've mixed up the batches so that some batches which were destined for Italy that contained the picture of the Italian set (which includes the Dogmatix figurine bourne by two Gauls on a red and white shield) have ended up being sold on the SA market - and bought by gullible eejits like yours truly. After a thorough googling I managed to find some twat gloating (you can almost hear the fucker over the webpage..haw haw haw. Fucker.) on bidorbuy.co.za that he's got two sets from Italy for sale which include these nefarious little pieces of bastard plastic that he is (make that was) prepared to let go for...wait for it...R 300.
Red? You better believe I'm red - I've spent over R 500 on these cretinous little characters in the last six months - maybe more.
And you know what? You can't do anything about it - the agents don't have any contact adresses, no customer care...nutting.
Bastardo dio, porca putana che catzo inculare!!!!

An Asterix fan? Cool and unusual, I just got the latest Asterix movie from ... unnamed sources. Will let you know once I've watched it.

Or are you a traditionalist who only digs the comics? Or only the figurines?

I don't really follow your story though... so what you are saying is that this bidorbuy guy has the one remaining piece of your set?

The story goes like so - in the Kinder Surprise eggs you run the chance of finding either one of the Asterix collection (of which a full set in SA is 9 characters - Asterix, Obelix, Getafix, Vitalstatistix, Panacea the blonde, the fishmonger, a Roman centurion and two legionnaires) or else you get these silly (as though Asterix figurines are not already a silly enough thing to collect...but that's another story) ghosts or these wierd baby / snail / pirate things, amongst others. With each Asterix character you get a picture of the whole set, which shows you which ones you've still to collect. Only after collecting shitloads of these things I noticed that on one of the pictures there was an extra piece - Dogmatix, held up on a red and white shield by two gormless-looking Gauls, making the full set actually 10 pieces, not 9. So my interest in collecting what I thought was the 'new' full set was increased. Only to find after some googling that in fact that piece isn't sold on the SA market, and is only available in Italy. So that led me to this dude on bidorbuy.co.za who was proudly boasting of his only-one-in-the-country set of 10 pieces, which he had somehow got from fair Italia. Bastard sold it for R300. So what I'm now gonna do is track down the importers/agents and plead my case. Reckon I've kept a couple Kinder employees in pension the way I've bought these damn eggs in search of Dogmatix. Grrrr. Anyone in the chocolate importing game? Anyone got contacts in Spar, Pick 'n Pay? Come on, people, throw me a bone, I got the Dogmatix blues...

One of the girls at Breetai's wedding picked up a Dogamatix from a locally bought Kinder Egg. The BidorBuy guy must have been talking bull. I personally know someone who has collected all ten, so it is (or was) definitely doable.

Hell, maybe the Bid or Buy guy was a snake-eyed charlatan out to make a buck or maybe the shipments got messed up or maybe I'm just bummed I've blown, like, a grand on chocolate (which, now that I stare at it on the screen seems as ridiculous as it is) but anyway, I've cooled my boots on the issue, gotten Zen Buddhist on my own ass and said 'Hey, like, dog...no dog...chocolate...mmm....chocolate....'
Maybe I get the dog, mebbe I don' gits tha dawg.
But for crying out loud if anyone has a Dogmatix that needs a good home, the Hedmekanik has a plastic box of Pedigree and little plastic doggie basket waiting for the widdle doggie diddums.
Go on, throw us a bone.

Probably missing the dog, that's the really tough nut to crack.

Full set - Asterix, Obelix, Getafix, the Chief (on a shield), Fishmonger, Blonde on log, Centurion, Legionairre 1 (broken spear), Legionairre 2 (w/shield) and...Dogmatix. That's it.

The only person I know who has that wee doggy is holding onto his enormous collection of Asterix Kinder whatnots like a bull barnacle on the bow of an oil tanker. Good luck.

(Kinda hope the bastard reads this - if you do, you evil bastard, gimme a shout and we can make a deal, at an appropriately neutral spot, like Tollgate Bridge. I'll come alone with a suitcase full of non-sequential used small bills. You bring the dog. You bastard.)
