2-in-1 Week Review

Love Jones, Big Idea, yummy Sushi... and Durban venues pushing live music... good times are here again. Here's a quick speech and few pics from around town these past few days.

Tuesday night is now officially a band night, and this week was Love Jones and Leever rocking out at Stones in Musgrave. Once again Love Jones put on a fantastic show, they are truly awesome in every aspect - kick-ass tunes, great vocals and a highly entertaining stage performance were the highlights of the night.

The band did the whole Halloween-themed dress up, and at the beginning of the set Esjay was jamming up on the pool table, stomping around and probably causing much damage to the poor thing. Since there were no owners running up to stop her, we figured it had to be a rental table. Just don't let the hiring company find out, as I'm pretty sure “stage” is not listed in the lease agreement as an acceptable use for a pool table.

One thing that was kinda crazy about the Stones gig was the sheer amount of women at the place. Seriously, like 95% of people on the dancefloor were chicks... sounds great, but guys don't bother trying your luck, if you know what I mean. Those girls were hardcore and really getting into each other with the swing dancing, dirty dancing, groping... highly entertaining to sit back and watch though!

Not content with one live act in a week (who would be?), we hit Society on Wednesday night for 1/2 price sushi and Big Idea, the Durban rap and hiphop legends who were out in full force.

I am in love with their album “Hot Box”. I'm normally pretty anti-hiphop, but with these lyrics and attitude, plus extreme amounts of musical ability and rapping talent, you just can't go wrong. I love the local flavour in their songs:

“We know Durban like the back of our hand, m'boy, we know Durban like the beach knows the sand, m'boy!”.... etc..

Brilliant. Stuck in my head all week! Also loved the freestyle rapping parts (at least, it looked pretty freestyle), and the vibe they have on stage with the audience. Highly entertaining, but I just wish it could've been a bit longer. R30 for just over half an hour set... what's that, like R1 a minute? That's more than Telkom charges! Of course it was still worth every cent, you understand. Check the link in the band links section on the left for their website.

Society's sushi is great. Ok, ok, it was the first time I've ever eaten the stuff, but it was definitely an experience to remember. Can anyone say “wonderful wasabi”? Now, can anyone say “wonderful wasabi” with some wasabi in their mouths?

Thought not. That's cause your throat is in thermal meltdown and sealed itself up, your eyes are streaming and there's mucus pretty much flowing from every orifice on your body.

Don't mess with that stuff, seriously. Next stop: Green Mango restaurant. I hear their wasabi is extra strong.
